Extension Lecture on Drama and Its Forms: With Special Reference to The Merchant of Venice

23-04-2025: The Department of English at Maharshi Jamdagni Government Girls College, Pillukhera, organized an insightful extension lecture on the topic "Drama and Its Forms: With Special Reference to The Merchant of Venice" under the esteemed chairmanship of Principal Dr. Ranbir Singh. The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Ram Niwas, Retd. Professor and Former Chairman, Department of English, Kurukshetra University Kurukshetra, who addressed the students with great scholarly depth. The program was coordinated by the Head of the English Department, Mr. Deepak Kumar. In his lecture, Dr. Ram Niwas shed light on the various forms of drama and their distinct characteristics. He conducted an in-depth analysis of William Shakespeare’s renowned play The Merchant of Venice, exploring its plot, characters, and the socio-economic themes embedded within. He highlighted contemporary relevance through topics such as gender equality, commercial ethics, and human values, particularly through the characters of Shylock and Portia. The interactive session included scene-wise analysis and group discussions, encouraging students to engage critically from both literary and social perspectives. Dr. Ram Niwas was also elaborated on the significance of language, dialogue, and dramatic techniques in Shakespeare’s plays, greatly aiding students in their comprehension of English literature. Principal Dr. Ranbir Singh praised the initiative, stating that such lectures foster a deeper interest in literature and help students cultivate analytical thinking. Mr. Deepak Kumar, Head, Dept.of English, shared that the department intends to continue organizing such academic events to acquaint students with the diverse dimensions of literature. The lecture proved to be highly inspiring for the students, who showed keen interest in understanding the literary and social relevance of drama. The event concluded with a vote of thanks to the chief guest, Assistant Professor Dr. Devendra, Mr. Sanjay Kumar, and all the participating students.
